Bakelite (polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride) is a polymer that was invented by the Belgian-born chemist, Leo Hendrik Baekeland in the year 1907. It is a precursor to modern plastic and feels heavier and less malleable than today's plastics.
Bakelite was originally used for both practical and decorative purposes. Today, thanks to the Retro and Vintage crazes, many Bakelite collectables are highly sought after.
